Four Mile Beach

Four Mile Beach Trivia

While today Four Mile Beach is known for being a little slice of paradise and has become a playground for tourists and locals alike, the beach was once a place of business rather than pleasure.

Due to the sand being so firm, in 1879 locals began to hold horse, motorcycle, and foot races along the beach. It was not long before the newly developed aviation industry took notice of the firm sand and decided that it would make a good spot for planes to land to collect mail being sent around Australia and to Papua New Guinea. Four Mile Beach even had a visit from aviation royalty when, on July 17, 1932, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith landed his plane on the golden sands.

Rock Pools

At the northern end of Four Mile Beach lies an area that is densely populated with rocks. As the tide splashes over the smooth boulders, it creates little rock pools, perfect for children to play and explore. The rocks also provide a perfect place to lay out a towel, soak up some rays, and enjoy a fabulous view of the beach.

Scenic Walk

If you want to observe some breathtaking views of Four Mile Beach, at the northern tip of the beach by the rocks lays a scenic walk that stretches and winds round a grassy bluff. With some great look-out points along the way, the walk is a great way to enjoy the view and take in some fresh sea air.

Kite Surfing

Four Mile Beach Port Douglas is touted as one of Tropical North Queensland's premier kite surfing locations. Local kite surfers say the best time to enjoy the sport is when the late southeast trade winds blow from April to October reaching around 15-20 knots. The conditions at Four Mile Beach make it a prime location for both advanced kite surfers, and those who are new to the sport.

Surf Life Savers

At most beaches across Australia, the red and yellow flags of the Australian Surf Lifesavers fly proudly in the cool ocean breeze. Four Mile Beach is no exception and The Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club patrol the beach to ensure the safety of swimmers. The Surf Life Savers can give you important information about the conditions of the ocean including water temperature and where rips may be located.
