Port Douglas Travel Family Tours And Attractions

Hot Air Ballooning

Yes if you and your family want to experience hot air ballooning then you do have to get up in the wee hours of the morning for the coach to pick you up from your Port Douglas holiday accommodation.

It is certainly worthwhile making the effort to experience hot air ballooning from Port Douglas as you will find it is around $100 cheaper per person than anywhere else in Australia and there are more guaranteed take offs and landings here in Port Douglas due to the calm stability of the Cairns regions weather for most of the year.

You will be taken to the top of the Atherton Tablelands for your breathtaking morning ride high above the fields and mountains and watch the sun rise in the distance. You will see native animals come to life in the morning light like Kangaroos and Wallabies and even see the humans as they start to wake and move about down below.

Hot air ballooning is a fun activity all of the family can enjoy. The children just need to be capable of pulling themselves in and out of the hot air balloon basket and so do the elderly guests that would like to come along for a hot air balloon ride as well.

BTS Skyrail-Kuranda Scenic Train and Kuranda Village

With two departures daily you can just sit back relax and take in the beautiful coastal scenery as you head south along the Captain Cook Highway toward the Kuranda Scenic Railway Train station or the Skyrail gondolas at Smithfield.

You will have a scenic journey up the McAllister Ranges on the heritage Kuranda Scenic Rail as you go thru tunnels and across bridges with no sides and absolutely nothing down below the Kuranda train apart from massive gorges and rivers.

You will glide past magnificent rainforests and waterfalls and be able to hang out the open windows and photograph the train as it winds around the bends. Keep your ears open for the ongoing commentary of the history of the Kuranda Scenic Train as you make your way up to the hippie village of Kuranda where you can explore the markets and see indigenous Aboriginal cultural displays, visit Australian native wildlife and even cuddle a Koala or feed a Kangaroo.

Otherwise get set for an adventure of soaring like an eagle high above the canopy of the rainforest trees as you gently glide your way up the McAllister Ranges in the Skyrail gondolas. For those of you that think you will be scared of the heights I can tell you from my own experience as a scaredy cat it is not hard at all as you skim the tops of the trees so it does not feel as you are just hanging up in the air, you feel like there is some stability down below. A visit to Skyrail and the Kuranda Scenic rail is a must do adventure for the whole family.

Flames of the Forest

Now Flames of the Forest is a real treat for the more grown up members in the family and not really suitable for children under the age of say 8 years. Flames of The Forest transfer coach will pick you up from your Port Douglas holiday accommodation and take you to a mysterious hidden valley rainforest location only a short drive from Port Douglas.

As you veer off the Captain Cook Highway and head into the western hillsides you will travel firstly along bitumen roads that turn into dirt road and your coach will take you across some quaint old fashioned hand made rickety bridges with rivers and streams that flow underneath. You will be in awe as you look out the window to the rainforest canopy above that overtakes the sky and covers the whole valley in an enchanting darkness enabling you only periodically to catch glimpses of the stars and the moon in between the layers of tree branches that envelope the valley.

As you wind your way around the valley you will come to a bend that will really make a big impression on you all and that will be the indicator that you are in for an evening that you will never forget.

The road before you will be lit up by fire blocking the transfer coach's path. This is where you will alight and walk thru the candelabra lit rainforest to your Flames of The Forest dinner location.

You are immediately awestruck by the giant black marquee that is draped with colorful chandeliers in all shapes and sizes. The surrounding rainforest setting has been lit beautifully by strategically placed lighting to showcase the majestic of the rainforest trees and the nocturnal rainforest animals will be your initial entertainment as they serenade you with their night calls.

If you are celebrating something special or you just want to enjoy a really different dining experience with the WOW factor then make sure you book your Flames of The Forest evening here before you come to Port Douglas to ensure you do not miss out as Flames of The Forest is extremely popular for Port Douglas Wedding and Conference Groups.
