What is a Total Solar Eclipse and a Solar Eclipse?
A Solar Eclipse is when the moon partially covers the face of the sun. A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully covers the face of the sun as we see it from the Earth. In Port Douglas Queensland Australia, on November 14th, 2012 we are going to experience the mesmerising total solar eclipse. The total solar eclipse will be best seen from a long narrow strip of land (aprox. 200 km wide) in Far North Queensland or the Pacific Ocean, Australia; and no ones got a better view than those who choose to be in Port Douglas on Four Mile Beach
The 2012 Solar Eclipse will begin at 5:44:27 AM and end at 7:39:42 AM. The Total Eclipse takes place for 2 minutes between 6:38:08 AM and 6:40:09 AM (East Australian Standard Time).
The 2012 Port Douglas Solar Eclipse Marathon
Although it is dangerous to look directly at the Solar Eclipse with the naked eye, magnifying lenses, binoculars or telescopes, all participants of the marathon can feel assured that they will be safe using the complimentary pair of glasses specially designed for eclipse viewing that will be given to all marathon participants.
The Port Douglas Marathon race begins as the sun rays emerge from behind the moon, beginning on beautiful Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas Australia. The Port Douglas regions scenery with the mix of beach, crystal clear waters, The Coral Sea and the Daintree Rainforest in the background is the most stunning and unique way to watch the total solar eclipse.
The Port Douglas Marathon is considered to be an adventure marathon due to the rough terrain and a mix of asphalt, sand grass, gravel and difficult ascents and descents of the up-hill and down-hill conditions. With water stations available every 3 km of the way along, it makes it easy for all competitors to complete the marathon route in the time limit of 7 hours.
The Port Douglas Marathon Route is ideal and is a pleasure for the participants to see some areas of Port Douglas that most will never see! The 2012 Solar Eclipse Marathon begins on Four Mile Beach, trailing off to the outskirts of Port Douglas towards the Mowbray River and then a stretch up the hill of Spring Creek. Head into the rainforest up to the bump track – a difficult, rugged and steep old mining road and past the sugar cane fields. Finally reaching the end, participants take their last haul uphill on the stairs to the point overlooking Four Mile Beach and then a final downhill sprint to the finish line located at Anzac Park in the heart of Port Douglas Queensland Australia.

- Day 1 – Saturday the 10th of November, 2012: Meet and Greet at the Sheraton Hotel, Port Douglas.
- Day 2 – Sunday the 11th of November, 2012: Sightseeing Day Tours and Optional evening run.
- Day 3 – Monday, the 12th of November, 2012: Sightseeing Day Tours and optional evening run.
- Day 4 – Tuesday, the 13th of November, 2012: Sighseeing Day Tours and Pasta Party.
- Day 5 – Wednesday, the 14th of November, 2012: The 2012 Total Solar Eclipse Marathon.
