Bally Hooley is a collection of historic diesel and steam locomotives that run between the Stations at Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina and St Crispins. A trip on the Bally Hooley is both a venue and a transport option, with stations located at Oaks Resort, Sheraton Grand, Crystalbrook Marina and St Crispins.
Each of the restored locomotives were workhorses that played a large part in hauling the cane from the nearby fields to the mill in Mossman. They now do a wonderful job of hauling many an excited visitor along its historic narrow gauge tracks (2ft, 610mm). The narrow gauge track that it travels along was laid over a century ago and was initially used to transport the freshly cut cane from Mossman to Port Douglas to the aptly named Sugar Wharf.
The trip is enjoyed by visitors and locals alike, of all ages-from tiny tots who have never experienced the joy of steam travel, to wedding guests transferring to their ceremony, to train-lovers-a trip on board the Bally Hooley is a truly iconic Port Douglas experience.
Departing Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina, your leisurely hour journey starts with a panoramic view over the harbour and its collection of sailing charter boats, luxurious superyachts, pleasure craft and trawlers.
The train passes through the tropical mangroves nestled behind the busy streets of Port Douglas. The service is staffed by a dedicated team of railway enthusiasts, who love sharing its story, and provide commentary on local history, ecology and culture along the way. After a quick stop at the Sheraton Grand Country Club and at QT Resort, the train heads on towards the St Crispins Station where the vibrant lakeside Choo Choos cafe is located.
St Crispins Station is also located close to the Ramada, Reef and Pool resorts. While the locomotive is un-coupled, and prepared for your return journey, enjoy brunch, a refreshing drink or an ice cream at Choo Choos. The lake and stunning Daintree range view is breathtaking.
Then it’s “All Aboard” for your return journey to the Marina.
