Bally Hooley – Heritage Steam Train Trip – Port Douglas

Bally Hooley – Heritage Steam Train Trip – Port Douglas

Bally Hooley, sponsored by Port Douglas Steam Train Company and the John Morris family, run two coal-fired steam locomotives called Speedy and Bundy. Both locomotives are over 55 years old and are the last locomotives that were used by the nearby Mossman Sugar Mill before the changeover to diesel.

Both Speedy and Bundy were workhorses and played a large part in hauling the cane from the nearby fields to the mill in Mossman. They now do a wonderful job of hauling many an excited visitor along its historic narrow gauge tracks (2ft, 610mm).

The narrow gauge track that it travels along was laid over a century ago and was initially used to transport the freshly cut cane from Mossman to Port Douglas to the aptly named Sugar Wharf.

Located in a siding near to the start of the Bally Hooley is the first diesel ever used on the mill that was bought from London in 1953 – the ‘Mowbray’.  The engine is still operational and is used for engineering and maintenance works.

The Bally Hooley is run and organised by passionate volunteer enthusiasts and all monies taken go back into maintenance and buying more coal and costs involved.  Their passion and drive adds to the magic of this experience.

The Bally Hooley mainly runs only on Sundays and public holidays and there are 4 trains a day starting from Marina Station (10.45, 12.30, 14.00, 15.30) and ending at St. Crispin’s Station.

Along the way you will pass by the Port Douglas Yacht club where you will see the luxury yachts moored in the marina and then along the coastal mangroves.  You will pass by the Mirage Country Club, the quirky QT Resort, and Rendezvous resort and to the scenic St Crispin’s Station.  Whilst the train is turned around on its special “turntable” you will have 8-10 minutes to admire the adjoining tidal lake that is part of the Mirage Golf Course. You might see spouting archer fish as they try and dislodge insects with their well targeted spitting of water and if you are lucky you might see one of the resident crocodiles.

For value for money and sheer enjoyment this must be one of the best and cheapest ways to enjoy your self in Port Douglas.  Affordable for all the family and children under 4 ride free, under 12’s are half price.
